HP may have ceased production on webOS smartphones and tablets - for now, at least - but the company hasn't stopped working on the operating system that powered devices like the Palm Pre and HP Touchpad. After several months of development and multiple stages of testing,
HP has released the first version of Open webOS, the open source software it began building after deciding to no longer develop new mobile hardware products. Open webOS 1.0 has a full source code, repositories, and development tools that allow companies to use webOS on their device.
The software is not limited to smartphones and tablets. A member of the Open webOS project demonstrates the OS on a HP Touchsmart PC in the video above. It took only two days to make the large touchscreen compatible, and kiosks, embedded displays, and all-in-one PC's could just as easily support Open webOS as a smartphone or tablet. All of the tools that someone needs to put it on their device can be found at OpenwebOSproject.org.
