Intel CEO Paul Otellini may be getting an angry phone call from Steve Ballmer today after it was revealed he told staff in Taiwan Windows 8 isn’t ready for release.
Otellini’s comments were made at an internal meeting in Taipai, and he must have naively thought they would never become public knowledge. We don’t know if he went into detail about what exactly is unfinished about Windows 8, but others have commented about a lack of reliable driver support and supporting applications. For many who have picked up previous versions of the Windows desktop OS early, this probably isn’t coming as a surprise.
What Microsoft can’t afford is another Windows Vista debacle, and you can be sure Intel will be 100 percent behind Windows 8 come launch day because most systems sold using it will have Intel hardware inside.
Even so, if Intel’s CEO doesn’t think the OS is finished then it’s sure to make more than a few early adopters think twice about upgrading or buying a new machine that runs it. Microsoft will, as usual, issue regular updates and Service Packs, but they typically take many months to appear. Just how bad Windows 8 is in terms of support won’t be known until it has been used in anger for a few weeks.
Clearly, unless you want Windows on a tablet, sticking with Windows 7 until next year seems like the only sensible thing to do at this point. If you’re still undecided, why not download the consumer preview of Windows 8 and see if it does everything you require.
